Gun Control

Gun control has always been a controversial issue in the United States. The question of whether to enforce stricter gun laws has always led to countless arguments, debates and protests. The 2nd amendment to the constitution gives the Americans the right to own guns however people are taking advantage of the 2nd amendment and using it for the wrong purposes. Access to gun control has increased the crime rates in the United States, however this issue isn’t being taken seriously. The intended audience of this visual essay are just not one person but many such as the people who own guns at home, the government officials; and more specifically, the federal government, president and congress, who aren’t looking much into this issue and letting people take advantage of the 2nd amendment. The federal government has the power to propose limitations on gun control to the constitution which means making changes to the 2nd amendment. After that it goes to the congress who makes laws and passes it to the president for him to sign. The purpose of my visual essay is to persuade and make my audience understand the risk of owning and having access to guns has raised in mass violence and how we are at a point, where they must take actions by making stricter gun laws. 

This meme is meant to raise awareness of how the 2nd amendment is causing mass killings and how it has increased Mosque, church, school shootings in the United States. It is intended to make the government officials see and realize that the 2nd amendment was passed in a different time period and the society has changed over time. People are now no longer using their rights to own guns for protection but rather to harm a group or individuals. The pieces are political cartoons that have images of American citizens being affected because of the government’s lack of focus on the gun control issue. I felt the use of political cartoons would be appropriate for presenting this issue and would catch their attention easily because political cartoons are colorful and eye-catching, it can easily catch people’s attention. In addition, political cartoons contain pictures and dialogue that sends a hidden but a very powerful message to certain groups of people. These messages are sent out to the audiences to inform them about certain political and social issues that the Americans are dealing with every day. Along with informing about issues, these political cartoons also present solutions to the audiences. 

To make the visual piece more appealing and eye catching, the artists used colorful images and texts. The purpose of this meme is to use those colorful images and texts to grab its targeted audiences and force them to look into the issue of gun control more seriously. The way my genre could be a success is because it’s a meme and any age of people nowadays are drawn into memes. Since, this meme is criticizing the 2nd amendment and how it’s affecting Americans people would be interested to look at it and think that the 2nd amendment should be modified in order to limit shootings.
